What is Counselling?

what is counselling?

Counselling falls under the umbrella term ‘Talking Therapies’. As a Counsellor I offer a safe, confidential and non- judgmental space for you to talk at your own pace, discuss difficulties and challenges and explore thoughts and feelings in more depth to help you get the best out of life. I am here to listen, empathise, encourage and help you to resolve and understand personal, social or psychological difficulties.

The therapy I offer is always person-centred which means that you are the expert on you.  I am here to guide you and can adapt to using a range of therapy approaches to suit you and your needs and objectives for therapy.

I use a humanistic, person-centred therapeutic counselling approach.  Humanistic therapy is a mental health approach that centres on the importance of being your true self in order to lead the most fulfilling life and to achieve personal growth. It’s based on the principle that everyone is unique and has their own experiences and views on the world around them.  This view can impact your choices and actions.

Therapies Explained

Counselling for Young People

therapy, counselling for young people, youth counselling

I offer counselling for young people age 14 and upwards. Growing up in the modern world can bring many challenges for young people who are navigating puberty and the physical and emotional changes this brings.

This is a time where they are starting to explore who they are and where they fit into the world. Many are trying to cope with pressures and expectations at school, college and university, understanding relationships and staying safe online on multiple social media platforms.

Grief Counselling – Bereavement & Loss

therapy, grief counselling, bereavement and loss

The loss of a loved one, whether it is a family member, friend, colleague or pet can be very hard to bear. Death may be expected or unexpected, a suicide and sometimes, unexplained and all of these circumstances can bring a wide range of feelings and challenges for the people left behind.

We can experience other losses too, for example, the loss of independence through illness or injury or the loss of employment, friendships, self-worth and confidence, your purpose in life, financial security or the loss of basic needs.

Walk and talk sessions (eco-therapy)

Immersing ourselves in nature, connecting with our own sense of sound, smell, touch can improve mental and emotional well-being. Sometimes, we can find it difficult to open up and know how and where to start talking.

Walk and Talk therapy sessions can help you connect with your therapist in a relaxed, uninhibited way, free to talk (or not), and just start connecting with themselves and how they feel. Slowing and quickening pace can elicit different responses and just being at one with nature can be incredibly nurturing and grounding.
